That’s why we don’t simply receive a used saddle and put it straight onto the website. Every used saddle goes through a careful inspection before we list it for sale.
Our aim is straightforward: to give you as much useful information as possible about the saddle’s condition so you can decide whether it is right for you and your horse.
Here’s what we look at.
Step 1: Tree Inspection
What we check:
- Overall tree condition
- Visible cracks or damage
- Signs of distortion
- Structural concerns
- General shape and condition
Step 2: Leather Inspection
Used leather naturally shows signs of previous use. Small marks and changes in color aren’t necessarily a problem, especially on an older saddle.
What matters is understanding the overall condition.
We inspect the leather throughout the saddle, looking for excessive wear, cracking, drying, stretching, scratches, discoloration, and other noticeable signs of use.
Where condition issues are visible, we aim to document them clearly in the product description and photographs.
What we check:
- Seat leather
- Flaps
- Skirts
- Jockeys
- Billets
- Keeper straps
- General leather condition
Step 3: Stitching Inspection
Stitching plays an important role in keeping the different parts of a saddle together.
We look over the visible stitching for loose threads, broken stitching, separation, or areas showing unusual wear.
We pay particular attention to areas that receive regular use.
If we find a noticeable stitching issue, it is something we want customers to know about before purchasing.
Step 4: Billet Inspection
Billets are an area that deserves particular attention because they connect the saddle to the girth.
We inspect the billets and their attachment points for signs of excessive wear, stretching, deterioration, damaged stitching, or other visible concerns.
We also look at the overall condition of the billet straps and surrounding leather.
Our goal is simple: make sure customers have clear information about the condition of an important part of the saddle before buying.
Step 5: Panel Inspection
The panels are another important area we examine.
We look underneath the saddle and inspect the panels for their general condition, visible damage, excessive wear, uneven appearance, or other concerns.
We also look for signs that may indicate the saddle has had significant previous use.
Because saddle fit is individual to each horse, our inspection is not intended to replace an in-person assessment by a qualified saddle fitter. Instead, it helps us provide better information about the saddle itself.
Step 6: Serial Number & Model Verification
Whenever the information is available and applicable, we check the saddle’s identifying details.
This can include:
- Brand
- Model
- Serial number
- Size
- Tree information
- Manufacturer markings
- Other identifying features
This helps us make the product listing as accurate as possible.
For branded saddles, accurate identification is particularly important because different models can have very different specifications and fitting characteristics.
Step 7: Final Quality Check
After we’ve inspected the individual components, we take another look at the saddle as a whole.
We consider its:
Condition → Construction → Appearance → Usability → Product information
We review the photographs and description to make sure they accurately represent the saddle we’re offering.
Our goal isn’t to make every used saddle sound perfect.
A used saddle is a used saddle, and normal signs of previous use are to be expected.
What matters to us is being clear and honest about what you’re buying.
Step 8: Photography & Listing
Once the inspection is complete, we photograph the saddle and prepare its product listing.
We want customers to see more than one carefully selected photograph.
Where appropriate, we aim to show:
- Front view
- Side views
- Seat
- Pommel
- Cantle
- Flaps
- Panels
- Billets
- Stirrup bars
- Leather
- Brand markings
- Serial/model information
- Visible signs of wear
The product description should then provide the important details customers need when comparing saddles.
What Our Inspection Does — And Doesn’t — Mean
We want to be clear about something important.
Our inspection is a condition and quality inspection of the saddle. It does not mean that a saddle is guaranteed to fit every horse or rider.
Saddle fit is individual.
A saddle that works well for one horse may not be appropriate for another horse, even if they appear similar.
That’s why we recommend that riders consider their horse’s conformation, back shape, measurements, discipline, and the rider’s requirements before purchasing.
When necessary, we also recommend consulting a qualified saddle fitter for an in-person assessment.
Why We Take the Time to Do This
We could simply photograph a saddle, write a short description, and put it online.
But that’s not the experience we want to provide.
When someone buys a used saddle from Best Horse Saddle Shop, we want them to have a reasonable understanding of what they’re purchasing before they place an order.
That means showing the good parts, explaining the condition, and pointing out noticeable signs of wear rather than pretending a pre-owned saddle is brand new.
Our approach is simple: inspect it carefully, describe it honestly, photograph it clearly, and give the customer the information they need to make an informed decision.
