Made With Wider Horses in Mind
The Monarch Cob GP S650 is one of those saddles that makes sense if your horse has a broader back.
It has a wider channel through the centre of the saddle, helping provide clearance around the spine, while the slightly straighter panels are designed to work with a broader shoulder.
The low-profile design also helps keep the saddle feeling close to the horse rather than sitting too high or giving the rider that “perched on top” feeling.
Of course, no two horses are exactly the same. Even if your horse has a cob-type build, it is still important to have the saddle checked by a qualified saddle fitter.
The Adjustable Gullet Is a Big Advantage
One of the things that makes this saddle particularly useful is the X Change adjustable gullet system.
The saddle can accommodate gullet bars from Narrow through to 4X Wide. This gives you some flexibility if your horse changes shape over time.
For example, horses can naturally become wider or narrower depending on their fitness, workload, age and seasonal condition. Being able to change the gullet can be useful rather than having to replace the entire saddle every time the horse’s shape changes.
This particular saddle currently has a W bar fitted.
An adjustable saddle does not mean that every width will suit every horse, so professional fitting is still recommended.
Comfortable for Everyday Riding
This is a GP saddle, so you don’t have to use it for just one type of riding.
It can be a useful saddle for riders who enjoy a mixture of activities, whether that’s a quiet hack at the weekend, schooling during the week or taking part in riding club activities.
The saddle includes:
- Moveable Velcro knee and calf blocks
- A thick padded knee roll
- Close-contact panels
- A balanced and comfortable seat
- Multiple girthing options
- Dual-flap construction
- Adjustable gullet system
- Low-wither design
- Flocked panels
- Leather construction
The adjustable knee and calf blocks are particularly handy because they can be positioned to suit your preferred riding position.
What Kind of Horse Could It Suit?
The GFS Monarch Cob GP S650 is generally intended for horses with:
- A wider back
- A lower wither
- A flatter back profile
- Broader shoulders
- A cob-type build
The channel and panel shape are designed with wider horses in mind, but the final fit should always be determined by a qualified saddle fitter.
Great for General Riding
If you want one saddle that can handle different parts of your riding routine, the Monarch Cob GP S650 is a versatile option.
It can be used for:
Hacking • Schooling • Flatwork • Riding Club • Leisure Riding • General-Purpose Jumping
It isn’t trying to be a highly specialised competition saddle. Instead, its strength is its everyday versatility and adjustable design.
Condition of This Saddle
This is a Grade 5 used saddle, so it does show visible signs of previous use.
The saddle has:
- General wear and some discolouration to the seat
- Light wear to the left flap
- Light wear to the right flap
- Other normal signs of use consistent with its grade
We recommend looking closely at all of the photographs before purchasing so you have a clear idea of the saddle’s current condition.
The saddle has also been inspected and comes with a saddle inspection report.
Buying a Used Saddle From the UK
A good second-hand saddle can be an excellent way to get a quality design without paying the price of a brand-new saddle.
For international riders, buying from the UK can also open up a much larger selection of English saddles, particularly when you’re searching for something specific such as a 17 inch wide cob saddle or an adjustable model.
We welcome customers from the:
🇬🇧 UK
🇺🇸 USA
🇪🇺 Europe
🇦🇺 Australia
International delivery is available, with tracking information provided for overseas orders.
Please remember that the UK mainland trial does not apply to international purchases.
5-Day Trial for UK Mainland Customers
If you’re based in the UK mainland, this saddle can be purchased on a 5-day trial.
The trial starts from the day you receive the saddle. Payment is taken when you place the order, and if the saddle fits and you’re happy with it, you simply keep it.
If you already have a saddle fitter booked, it’s a good idea to arrange delivery a couple of working days before your appointment. This gives you some breathing room in case the courier is delayed.
What About USA, Europe and Australia?
The 5-day trial is currently only available to UK mainland customers.
Customers in the USA, Europe and Australia can still purchase the saddle, but international orders are not covered by the UK mainland trial.
If you’re buying internationally, we recommend sending the saddle’s measurements and photographs to your local fitter before ordering.
Getting the Right Fit
We always recommend putting fit before brand, colour or price.
The fact that this saddle adjusts from Narrow to 4X Wide is useful, but it doesn’t automatically make it suitable for every wide horse.
Your fitter should look at the horse’s back, withers, shoulder movement, spine clearance and overall shape, as well as your own riding position.
If you’d like to ask about this particular saddle, use the Saddle ID S12803 when contacting the team.

The warranty is intended for saddles that are properly cared for and maintained. It doesn’t cover accidental damage, misuse, neglect, fire or theft.
If the saddle is altered by an owner or saddle fitter, the warranty may no longer apply. It’s therefore best to get professional advice before making any changes.

The guaranteed buy-back option is currently available to UK mainland customers only.
Looking After the Leather
The saddle is made from natural leather, so regular care will help keep it looking and feeling its best.
Small differences in colour, grain and texture are normal with genuine leather. These natural characteristics aren’t necessarily faults.
After riding, remove dirt and sweat with a soft, slightly damp cloth or sponge. Use a suitable equestrian leather cleaner or saddle soap when necessary, and condition the leather regularly with an appropriate leather-care product.
Pay particular attention to areas that experience more friction, including the:
- Girth straps
- Billets
- Stirrup leather contact areas
- Girth buckle areas
Avoid household cleaning products or cleaners intended for car interiors and furniture.
A Quick Note About Colour Transfer
Because this is natural leather, some colour transfer onto breeches can occur, particularly when the saddle is new, damp or has recently been treated with leather conditioner.
This can be normal with leather saddles and generally reduces with use.
